The 10th-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team was edged 5-4 by #3 Pomona-Pitzer in a showdown on Wednesday at the Pauley Tennis Complex in Claremont, California. The Panthers return to action on Friday when they square off with fourth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 2:00 p.m. eastern.

During doubles play, Middlebury (5-2) moved out to an early 1-0 lead when the #3 duo of
Brinlea La Barge and
Sami Remis eased past their opponents by an 8-2 score. The Sagehens (11-1) tied the match at 1-1 with an 8-3 victory at the top spot, before gaining a 2-1 edge headed into singles action with a narrow 8-6 triumph at #2.Â

Pomona-Pitzer grabbed a 3-1 advantage with a 6-4, 6-0 win in the third slot during singles play. The Panthers came roaring back to knot the contest at 3-3 behind straight-set victories from
Claudia Miller at #5 (6-2, 6-3) and La Barge in the second position (6-4, 6-4). The Sagehens recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win at the bottom of the lineup, followed by a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 triumph at #4 to clinch the team's fifth point.Â
