Firdaus Shallo earned the deciding point in the final match, as the #19 Panthers edged #20 St. Lawrence 5-4 on Sunday in the Walker Division Fifth-Place Match at the 2022 Collegiate Squash Association (CSA) Championships.
Maya Bardorf secured the initial point for Middlebury, sweeping her opponent 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-8) in the fifth position to tie the score at 1-1. The teams traded victories in the next two games, as
Grace Santoro posted a 3-2 (9-11, 11-13, 11-7, 12-10) triumph at #6 before
Kieran Suntha followed with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-9) sweep in the seventh spot to knot the contest at 3-3.
Eva Finney gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead with a 3-1 (11-5, 0-11, 11-4, 12-10) decision at #4, but the Saints won in the third spot to produce the fourth tie of the match. Shallo tallied the deciding victory 3-2 (6-11, 11-5, 12-14, 11-9, 12-10), claiming the last two games to overcome an early deficit.
Middlebury finished the season winning three of its final four matches, with each of those wins coming against ranked opponents.
