Riley Griffis of the Middlebury men's swimming and diving team tied the school record in the 500-yard freestyle on the second day of the NESCAC Championships. The Panthers sit in eighth place out of 11 teams following the first full day of competition. Williams is first with 887 points, followed by Tufts (688.5), Bowdoin (443), Amherst (432) and Bates (415). The Panthers have tallied 302 points through Friday's action. The teams return to action inside the Colby Aquatic Center on Saturday morning with prelims beginning at 10:00 a.m.Â

Highlighting the evening for the Panthers was Griffis, who touched the wall in 4:31.36 in the record-tying event, placing fourth with an NCAA 'B' cut. That time tied the school record set by Kevin O'Rourke in 2009.

The evening started with the 200-free relay, as the Middlebury team of
Aidan McKenrick,
Jake Gaughan,
Christopher Pederson and
Samuel Hughes swam to eighth place with a time of 1:23.28.

Pederson followed that in the next event with a 14th-place effort in the 50 breaststroke (26.32), while
Isaac Esposito was 15th during the 50 butterfly (22.94).

Other top-16 individual finishes in the pool were posted by
Jack Undercofler and Hughes. Undercofler was 16th in the 50 back with a clocking of 24.01, while Hughes stopped the clock in 1:53.23 during the 200 individual medley, which was good for 15th.

On the 1-meter diving board,
Ryan Greguski scored 332.15 points to finish 10th, while teammate
Liam Smith was right behind in 11th place (330.00 points).Â

In the final event of the evening, the 400 medley relay quartet of Undercofler, Pederson, Griffis and McKenrick touched the wall in seventh place (3:23.90).Â
