Antoine Belisle of the men's hockey team (5-12-3, 4-11-2) scored with 1:19 remaining in overtime, propelling the Panthers to a 3-2 victory at Amherst (9-11-2, 8-8-1) on Friday night. Middlebury wraps up the regular season on Saturday when it travels to Hamilton for a 3:00 p.m. puck drop.
The Mammoths had a great chance to get on the board during a power play with 7:43 expired, but Matt Toporowski's shot hit the pipe and ricocheted away. The Panthers nearly scored with an extra player at the 11:16 mark, but
Chris Garbe's attempt from the high slot was thwarted by Amherst goalie Dan Dachille. Middlebury broke through with 14:54 elapsed in the first period.
Wyatt Pastor collected the puck from behind the net and sent a pass to
Paddy Bogart in between the circles. Bogart one-timed the pass into the back of the net to make it 1-0 with his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Panthers doubled their lead 8:43 into the second stanza when
Zach Milton wristed a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle for his first career tally. The Mammoths responded just 30 seconds later when Matteo Mangiardi took advantage of a turnover and slipped the puck past Panther goalie
Jake Horoho to make it 2-1. Amherst's Ben Kuzma knotted the game 2-2 with just under five minutes remaining in the middle frame, tipping in a pass from Toporowski on the right pipe.
Middlebury had a great chance for the game-winner with 10:30 elapsed in the third period.
Andrej Hromic sent a pass from the right point to the high slot that
Nolan Moore one-timed, but his bid went just wide right, forcing the contest into overtime.
During the extra stanza, Amherst had back-to-back opportunities to score during the second minute of play. The first shot from the slot sent Horoho sprawling across the crease to deny the chance. Before he had a chance to get up, Kuzma one-timed the rebound from point blank range, but his shot hit the pipe. The Panthers tallied the golden goal at the 3:41 mark when Belisle collected the puck behind the Amherst net, skated around two Mammoth defenders and wristed the shot from between the circles into the goal for the 3-2 final score.
Horoho made 23 saves between the pipes to earn the win in goal for Middlebury, while Dachille had 30 stops for Amherst. The Panthers held an advantage in shots (47-42) and faceoffs (28-25).
