Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#7 Men’s Soccer Edged 1-0 By Tufts

The seventh-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team saw its nine-match unbeaten streak come to an end, falling 1-0 to Tufts.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers produced a pair of scoring chances in the early stages of the first half. Eujin Chae blasted a shot just over the crossbar with 8:49 elapsed, while Kyle Nilsson's shot from 25 yards a minute later was saved by Jumbo goalie Erik Lauta jumping to his right.
  • Tufts grabbed the early lead on a free kick from the edge of the penalty box. Woovin Shin ripped a knuckling shot that tucked inside the left post at the 12:26 mark for the 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury nearly knotted the match with 23:42 elapsed, but Tyler Payne's volley from 15 yards was saved when Lauta outstretched his hands and punched the ball wide.
  • The Panthers continued to apply pressure in the latter stages of the stanza, with the best opportunity occurring during the 39th minute. Alem Hadzic worked toward a cross in the middle of the field, but his header from eight yards was caught under the crossbar by Lauta to send the match to halftime with Tufts leading 1-0.
  • Much of the play occurred in the midfield during the opening minutes of the second half.
  • Mason Shultz had two quality scoring chances three minutes apart for the Jumbos, but Middlebury goalie Ryan Grady thwarted both attempts.
  • With 10 minutes left in the contest, Tufts' Daniel Yenez's shot on the edge of the box was saved by Grady jumping high to his right.
  • The Panthers manufactured several scoring opportunities in the last nine minutes of regulation.  Chae blasted a volley from 20 yards that Lauta laid out to his right and saved with 8:43 left.
  • Middlebury had a great final chance as the seconds ticked down. Jordan Saint-Louis ran onto a loose ball 10 yards out on the left side of the goal mouth, but his bid bounded just wide of the right post for the final 1-0 decision.
NOTES
  • Middlebury's 5-2-2 conference record and 17 points are second in the tightly-bunched standings behind Bowdoin (first, 6-1-2). Hamilton is in third with 16 points and a 4-2-4 mark, while Amherst is fourth with 14 points (3-1-5).
  • Today's contest was the 11th time in the last 14 meetings that have been decided by one goal.
