Bowdoin's Albert Washco netted the game's lone goal at the 3:05 mark over overtime, as Middlebury dropped a 1-0 NESCAC decision at Bowdoin (2-4-1, 2-2-0) on Tuesday. The Panthers (1-4-0, 0-3-0) continue conference play on Friday with a 7:00 p.m. road tilt at Trinity.
Middlebury goalie
Jake Horoho was solid in the opening 20 minutes of the game, stopping all 14 shots he faced. The Panther came up big twice in the first four minutes, turning away both Kyle Jadatz and Will Forrest on breakaways. Middlebury generated a couple of good chances as
Jack Clarner hit the post with a shot from the right circle and Polar Bear netminder Alex Kozic denied
Wyatt Pastor from point-blank range.
EMack Bentley, who beat a Bowdoin defender to the puck to negate an icing call, set up that scoring chance.
The game stayed scoreless through the middle frame with the Panthers nearly getting on the board early. Pastor had back-to-back bids from close range that were thwarted by Kozic. Bowdoin's best opportunity came with just over six minutes expired, as Ethan Kimball moved in from the left point and fired a rising wrist shot that Horoho corralled.
In the third period, Pastor had another chance to get on the scoreboard with a shot from the slot, that Kozic got a piece of with the puck then sliding wide of the left pipe. The Panthers kept pressing, as Andrej Hronic burst into the Polar Bear zone with speed and got off a low shot from the slot that Kozic kicked away with 6:07 on the clock. Horoho added a save in the final seconds of regulation on Patrick Callahan, sending the contest into overtime.
Skating with three players aside in the extra five-minute session, Middlebury almost ended the game in the first minute with Bentley redirecting a centering pass just wide of the net. Washco netted the game-winner from the right side, tipping in a pass from Joe Alexander.
Horoho was solid in goal, stopping 39-40 shots, while Kozic turned aside all 24 shots he saw for the Polar Bears.
Middlebury went 0-3 on the power play, while muting all four Bowdoin chances.
