Top-Ranked Middlebury Beats Hamilton Behind Hargrave’s Two Goals

Katie Hargrave netted a pair of goals in the second period to lead top-ranked Middlebury (14-0, 9-0) past visiting Hamilton 2-1 on Friday. The two teams complete their two-game NESCAC series on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

The 14-0 start is the best for Middlebury since the 2005-06 season, when the team started with 18-consecutive victories. The Panthers are also the lone remaining unbeaten team in Division III.

Middlebury controlled play for most of the opening frame, but the Continentals (8-5-0, 5-4-0) opened the scoring on their first shot of the game. Christina Spanier took a centering pass from Mya Berretta and deked Panther goalie Caroline Silk at the 10:48 mark. Middlebury had a couple of chances minutes later to draw even, as Madie Leidt fired a shot from the right side on the rush that was denied by Hamilton goalie Sidney Molnar. Seconds later, Jenna Letterie redirected a shot from the slot just wide of the right post.

In the second frame, the Panthers pulled even in transition on a nice passing play. Leidt hit Hargrave who was trailing the play and capped the sequence with her fourth tally of the season with 15:52 on the clock. They forged ahead with 1:56 showing on the clock, scoring on a delayed penalty. Hargrave had her initial shot from the slot blocked by a Hamilton defender, but she collected the rebound and lifted the puck into the Continental net to make it 2-1.

Silk made a key save just past the midway mark of the final period, denying a tip in front by Hyla Mosher. After Silk's save, the Panthers muted a Hamilton power play to maintain their one-goal lead. In the closing minutes, Middlebury's forecheck prevented the Continentals from getting Molnar to the bench for an extra skater until there were only 28 seconds left in the contest. The hosts didn't allow a shot in that span, securing the 2-1 victory.

Silk stopped 13-14 shots that she faced, earning the win for the Panthers, while Molnar made 45 saves for Hamilton.

Middlebury held a decisive 47-14 advantage in shots.
