Middlebury Hall of Famer Kent Hughes '92 was named general manager of the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadiens on Monday. Hughes becomes the 18th general manager of the Canadiens and brings over 25 years of hughes experience as an NHL player agent to the position.

On November 6, 2021, Hughes was inducted into the Middlebury Hall of Fame Class of 2020. The ceremony occurred a year later than originally planned due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"We are thrilled for Kent to take on this new role with the Montreal Canadiens," said Middlebury's longtime former head coach Bill Beaney. "If you spend long enough coaching you might be fortunate and lucky to have a player like Kent, one that is a literal game changer, a transformative influence. Kent has been using these skills to create a highly successful career as a lawyer and player agent to several high-profile NHL players. We were fortunate to be able to celebrate all of Kent's contributions and accomplishments this fall at our Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The entire Middlebury community wishes Kent all of the best as he begins this new chapter."

Hughes was one of the driving forces in the emergence of Middlebury hockey in the 1990s. A captain during his senior season (1991–92), the All-American holds modern-day program records for assists (140) and points (194) in a career. Hughes's assists total is 37 more than his nearest challenger. He also holds modern-day program records for most assists (48) and points (63) in a season, set during his final year in a Panther uniform.

Hughes and his teammates compiled a 65-13-2 record over his final three years, advancing to the ECAC title game in 1990 before winning the championship in 1991.
