Madie Leidt scored with just 47 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the top-ranked Middlebury women's hockey team past Wesleyan (6-2, 2-2) on Friday night. The Panthers remain one of just two teams left in Division III without a loss, as they extended their win streak to double digits (10-0, 5-0) The teams take to the ice on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. for the second game of the series.
The Cardinals had a good chance to score during a power play 6:36 in, but Effie Tournas' bid from the top of the right faceoff circle was turned away by Middlebury goaltender
Caroline Silk.
Leidt looked to give the Panthers the lead at the 8:24 mark, but her one-timer from the doorstep was thwarted by Cardinal netminder Rei Halloran to keep the game scoreless after one period of action.
Middelbury came out of the break strong, with several chances coming during a power play during the fourth minute. The Panthers had seven shots during the span, with back-to-back point-blank bids from
Claudia Vira, but the Wesleyan defense stood up to deny all chances.
The Cardinals had the best scoring opportunity of the game with just 42 ticks left on the clock in the middle frame. Tournas intercepted the puck in transition, and skated on a breakaway towards Silk. She attempted to tuck the puck inside the left pipe, but Silk sprawled out, denying the chance with her pad.
With 9:09 expired in the third period,
Raia Schluter looked to break the scoreless draw. She wristed a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle that just grazed the top of the crossbar and richocheted away. Schluter had another quality bid with just 1:23 left in regulation during a power play. Maddie Beyard and Schluter set up a beautiful give-and-go, but Schluter's shot from the doorstep was thwarted by Halloran to force overtime.
Leidt tallied her conference-leading fifth game-winner with just 47 ticks left on the clock in the extra session. She collected the puck in the defensive end, chipped it past a defender on the right boards, before finding the upper-right corner of the goal for the 1-0 final.
Silk made 12 saves in goal to maintain her perfect 0.00 GAA, while Halloran had an impressive 47 saves for Wesleyan.
