The Middlebury football team (0-1) saw its nine-game win streak come to an end, as the Panthers fell 41-13 at Williams (1-0) on Saturday. Up next for Middlebury is the home opener next Saturday against Bates at 1:00 p.m.
The Ephs scored on their initial possession of the game, covering 80 yards in nine plays. Quarterback Robert Maimaron capped the drive with a one-yard run and the point after by Ivan Shuran made it 7-0 with 8:50 on the clock.
Middlebury needed only 2:29 to pull even, as Will Jernigan tossed a short pass to Peter Scibilia, who scampered 17 yards for the score. Zach Moore booted the PAT to knot the score at 7-7. Williams jumped back in front by the end of the opening frame on a seven-yard run by Joel Nicholas.
A pair of quick scores just before the half extended the Eph lead to 28-7. Maimaron scored on a two-yard run with 3:29 remaining, after a 33-yard pass over the middle to Frank Stola gave Williams a first-and-goal. Four plays later, Jerrett Wesner intercepted a Jernigan pass and Maimaron needed only one snap to find the end zone, connecting with Mike DeGasperis for an 18-yard scoring strike. The first of those touchdowns also came off of a turnover.
In the third quarter, Jernigan gave the Panthers a spark on their second possession, hitting on three-straight passes for 61 yards, including two to Dan Thompson. The last of those resulted in the first-career touchdown for receiver Donovan Wood from 23 yards to make it a 28-13 contest.
Nicholas added a pair of touchdowns in the final quarter, one from four yards and the other from six, making the final 41-13.
Scibilia finished with 67 yards on the ground on 10 carries and hauled in a team-high five passes for 47 yards and a score. Jernigan went 15-31 for 215 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions.
Gordon Pollock led Middlebury with 10 tackles and Jack Pistorius had nine, while Macken McDonald recorded a sack.
Maimaron had a big game for the Ephs, going 9-17 for 136 yards and a touchdown, while going 19-162 and a pair of TDs on the ground. On defense for Williams, Wesner boasted 10 tackles with two sacks and an interception.
Williams outgained the Panthers 424-315 and came away with a 4-1 advantage in turnovers.
