#11 Middlebury Nets 1-0 Road Win At Wheaton

Capping off a busy opening week of the season, #11 Middlebury (2-1) posted a 1-0 road victory at Wheaton (2-2) on Sunday. The Panthers were playing their third match in six days. Middlebury returns home on Wednesday, hosting Plattsburgh State at 4:30 p.m.

The Panthers carried play in the opening 45 minutes, getting the only three shots on goal. Middlebury made a push right before the clock expired with a late corner kick by Magnolia Moskun, but Lyon keeper Gabby Marcus corralled the free ball, keeping the game scoreless at the half.

In the early stages of the second frame, Middlebury's Fanny Lodge made a nice bid to put the visitors on the scoreboard. The Panther slid past a defender inside the top-right corner of the penalty area, before curling a shot just wide of the far post. Just over a minute later, Lodge fired a shot from 25-yards that eluded Marcus inside the left post for a 1-0 lead with 35:09 showing on the clock.

Wheaton had an opportunity to pull even midway through the half, as Nevaeh Petrucci collected a short clearing attempt by the Panthers and quickly put a shot wide right.

Ellie Bavier had an attempt for an insurance goal for the visitors with 15 minutes remaining, but her rising shot from the right wing was snared by Marcus. Ten minutes later, Middlebury had a golden chance to double its lead, but Anna Glovin's penalty kick went over the crossbar.

Panther goalie Lucy VanNewkirk made her only save of the game with 1:09 remaining with a diving stop to her left on a shot by Gaby Diaz from close range.

Marcus finished with seven saves for Wheaton.

The Panthers held an 18-4 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
