The Middlebury men's swimming and diving team fell 172-122 to 18th-ranked Amherst College on Saturday afternoon in its home opener. The Panthers conclude first-semester competition at Springfield on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Panthers won the 200-yard medley and 200 freestyle relays to open and close the meet. The quartet of
Jack Undercofler,
Bryan Chang,
Riley Griffis and
Jake Gaughan edged Amherst by 0.22 seconds with a winning time of 1:33.51 in the medley relay. Gaughan and Griffis teamed up with Christopher Pedersen and Sam Hughes in the freestyle relay to claim the top spot with a clocking of 1:25.04.
Middlebury had five individual winners during the meet. Griffis claimed the 200 free for the second week in a row, besting his time from a week ago by four seconds (1:40.72). Undercofler repeated as champion in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 51.49.
Eli Drachman stopped the clock first in the 200 butterfly edging out Amherst's Peter Baird by .12 seconds with a time of 1:58.01. Hughes took the top spot in the 50 free, edging out Mammoth Christian Moy by .04 seconds with a time of 21.42.
Liam Smith breezed to the triumph off the 1-meter board with 223.27 points.
