Middlebury's
Bill Mandigo became the first coach at any NCAA level to reach the 600-win plateau, as the Panthers (2-0-0, 2-0-0) skated to a 6-0 triumph over visiting Connecticut College (0-2-0, 0-2-0) on Saturday. Mandigo, who is in his 34th season, has a tremendous record of 600-158-48 for a lofty .774 winning percentage. Middlebury returns to the ice on Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Castleton, while the Camels host Johnson & Wales on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
The Panthers outscored Connecticut College 8-0 in the two-game sweep.
The Camels had the initial push on Saturday, recording the first three shots on goal in the opening period, but the hosts countered with a pair of tallies just 2:18 apart. The first score came on the power play with
Katie Hargrave getting the puck to
Jenna Letterie behind the net, who sent a pass to
Madie Leidt in the slot. Leidt snapped a shot to the right side of the net for her first goal of the season with 12:04 on the clock. Leidt struck again moments later, intercepting a pass in the Camel zone, getting off a shot that Connecticut College goalie Carly Denora denied, but Leidt swept in the rebound for a 2-0 advantage.
The Camels came close to cutting the difference to a goal eight minutes into the middle frame while on a power play. Melanie Conca tipped a shot in front that Middlebury goalie
Sophia Merageas kicked aside. Seconds later, Merageas denied Conca again, this time from the top of the blue paint.
The hosts pushed their lead to 3-0 with 5:38 left in the second period, as
Jordan Hower banged in a pass at the top of the crease from
Maddie Bayard for her first collegiate tally.
In the final 20 minutes, the Panthers exploded for three goals. The first came when
Julia Johnson wristed a shot from the right point that eluded traffic for her first tally as Panthers 5:38 into the frame. Leidt completed the hat trick with 7:19 remaining, tucking in a give-and-go with Letterie.
Cat Appleyard capped the scoring with her initial score at the collegiate level, taking advantage of a power-play opportunity in the closing minutes for the 6-0 final.
Merageas earned her first collegiate shutout with 19 saves, while Denora had 32 stops for the Camels. Middlebury doubled up Connecticut College in shots (38-19), while going 2-4 on the power play and muting all four shorthanded situations.
