Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Middlebury Battles #21 Amherst To Scoreless Draw

The Middlebury women's soccer team and #21 Amherst battled to a 0-0 draw on Sunday in NESCAC action. The Panthers (6-3-1, 1-3-1) are home again on Saturday for a league contest against Bates at 11:00 a.m., while Amherst (7-1-1, 3-1-1) heads to Wesleyan the same day for a 12:00 p.m. start.

The Mammoths had an opportunity to open the scoring in the initial minute of the contest, but Alexa Juarez's header off a corner from Sophia Fikke went wide of the right post.

Middlebury had a pair of good chances midway through the frame. Olivia O'Reilly had the first one as her rising shot from the right side of the penalty area was snared by Amherst goalie Mika Fisher. With 18:40 showing on the clock, Simone Ameer hit a high shot that Fisher caught right below the crossbar as the teams went into the half in a scoreless tie.

Middlebury keeper Lucy VanNewkirk made her best stop midway through the second half, diving to her right and punching away a bid by Mammoth forward Natalie Landau. The Panthers came within inches of scoring with 16 minutes left in regulation, as Ameer fired a shot that hit the crossbar.

After an uneventful first 10-minute overtime period, the chances picked up in the second one. Eliza Van Voorhis jumped on a loose ball for the Panthers at the top of the penalty area and drilled a shot left of the net. In the waning moments, Ameer had another opportunity, this time sliding a shot from the right side just past the left post to keep the game scoreless.

VanNewkirk made four saves for her second shutout of the season, while Fisher had seven stops for the Mammoths.

Middlebury held a 17-11 advantage in shots, while Amherst led in corner kicks 6-2.
