Middlebury's
Shane Farrell scored with 1:15 left in double overtime, as the Panthers earned a 1-0 victory at Williams (7-6-3, 3-5-2) on Tuesday in the regular-season finale. With the win, Middlebury (10-3-2, 5-3-2) secured the fourth seed in the NESCAC Tournament and will host fifth-seeded Wesleyan in a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday with a time TBD.
Williams had the game's initial scoring chance with just over eight minutes expired, as Dan Rayhill fired a shot from the left side that Panther keeper
Ryan Grady made a diving save on. Minutes later, Middlebury's
Jordan Saint-Louis settled a ball at the top of the Eph penalty area and touched a short pass to a charging Farrell. Farrell fired a hard low shot that went just wide of the near post.
Rayhill had another bid for Williams with 19:17 on the clock, directing a shot on net from 20-yards out that Grady collected, as the teams remained scoreless into the half.
Less than two minutes into the second stanza, Felipe Gutierrez had a good scoring opportunity for hosts. The Eph carried the ball deep into the Panther box and got off a quick from inside 10 yards that Grady held his ground to make the save.
Middlebury looked to open the scoring in the 64th minutes when
Casey Lund volleyed a long pass to himself on the right side, before firing a shot from on goal that Williams' goalie Ben Diffley snared. Diffley came up big again minutes later, making a kick save on a break from
Tyler Payne setting up overtime.
Neither team registered a shot in the first extra session, but that changed in the second 10-minute overtime period. Saint-Louis made a nice run up the left side and laced a shot toward the lower left corner that Diffley dove to knock away.
The deciding play came with the clock winding down, as Payne slid pass back to Farrell 25-yards out from the net. Farrell rocketed a shot that went into the upper-right corner for his third tally of the season.
Grady made five saves for his ninth shutout of the season, while Diffley had five stops for the Ephs.
Middlebury had a15-9 advantage in shots, but Williams held a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
