Box Score The Middlebury football team (1-5) dropped a 24-0 contest at Wesleyan (6-0) on Saturday, as the Cardinals extended their winning streak to nine-straight games. The Panthers return home next Saturday to face Bowdoin at 1:00 p.m. as part of homecoming weekend.
Wesleyan received the opening kickoff, taking advantage of the possession, marching 75 yards in 14 plays for a touchdown. David Estevez carried the ball up the middle from five-yards out and Daniel Yoon booted the point after for a 7-0 lead.
The Panthers caught a break when they recovered a Wesleyan fumble on a punt, but Middlebury was unable to cash in on the short field. After losing the ball on downs, the hosts turned the tide and doubled their advantage when Estevez scampered 17 yards around the left end for a 13-0 lead, with Yoon tacking on the successful point after touchdown.
Middlebury threatened late in the half when
Will Jernigan tossed a 37-yard pass to
Greg Livingston on the right side to put the team inside the Cardinal 20 with less than a minute on the clock. The Wesleyan defense held its ground, stopping the visitors on a 4th-and-7, keeping the score at 14-0 at the break.
After an uneventful drive to start the second half, the Panthers punted the ball back to the Cardinals. The hosts drove deep into Middlebury territory, but
Finn Muldoon came up with a big interception in the end zone to thwart the drive.
The Panthers took a chunk of time off the clock moving the ball into the Cardinal half of the field. Jernigan rattled off a run of 18 yards and tossed a 24-yard strike to
Charlie Reinkemeyer, only to see the drive stall on a loss of downs.
The hosts added a 23-yard field goal by Yoon on the opening play of the final frame, extending the lead to 17-0.
Wesleyan used its defense to get on the scoreboard just over five minutes later, as Zack Thannum forced a fumble on Jernigan and Joe Flinn recovered the ball in the end zone. Yoon then extended the difference to 24-0 with the PAT.
Jernigan went 13-35 for 175 yards and two interceptions, while
Ben Tauber was 4-6 for 71 yards. Reinkemeyer hauled in six receptions for 81 yards, while
Donovan Wood had 57 receiving yards on two catches.
