Eliza Van Voorhis scored 35 seconds into the second overtime, lifting Middlebury to a 2-1 victory at Colby (3-5-2, 0-5-2) on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers (9-3-1, 4-3-1) return to action next Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. kickoff at Trinity.
The Mules took a 1-0 lead at the 18:07 mark with a goal from Lucy Robinson. Her shot came from midfield into the box as Panther goalkeeper Sydney Poppinga came out to play the ball. The ball bounced high into the air and through the outstretched hands of Poppinga and into the back of the net.
The Panthers tied the game just 39 seconds into the second half with the first of her career by Olivia O'Reilly. Fanny Lodge sent a pass behind the Colby defense where O'Reilly volleyed a hard-looping shot just under the crossbar to knot the game at 1-1.
Neither team could take the lead in the remainder of the half, forcing the contest into overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime stanza, the Panthers ended the game early in the second. Ellie Bavier played a long pass ahead to Van Voorhis, who ran onto the ball at the 18. Colby keeper Ashley Boardman came out to challenge Van Voorhis, who one-touched the ball into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season and the Middlebury victory.
The Panthers held a 26-11 shots advantage in the game and held a 6-1 edge in corner kick. Poppinga finished with five saves in goal, while Boardman made nine for the hosts.
