Middlebury's Virginia Charman scored with 2:16 left in regulation, breaking a scoreless tie and lifting the Panthers to a 1-0 road NESCAC triumph on Saturday at #10 Tufts (10-2-2, 6-2-1). Middlebury (11-1-2, 6-1-2) wraps up the regular season on Tuesday, entertaining #25 Williams on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

The visitors had a chance to get on the scoreboard early, as Ellie Greenberg slipped behind a defender in the opening minute. She directed a low shot on goal from the right side that Jumbo goalie Hayley Bernstein scooped up.

Tufts had a great chance minutes later, when Liz Reed fired a shot from the top of the penalty area that Panther keeper Ursula Alwang punched over the cross bar. Reed nearly struck again with 11:40 expired, putting a shot off where the cross bar and right post meet.

With 1:19 ticked off the clock in the second stanza, Middlebury had a free kick from the top-left corner of the penalty area with Isabelle Hartnett's hooking shot hauled in by Bernstein. Gretchen McGrath provided the visitors with another scoring bid in the 68th minute, directing a left-footed shot on goal from that Bernstein fell on.

Alwang came up with a huge stop with 12:53 showing on the clock, lunging to her right to thwart Sophie Lloyd's low shot. Middlebury tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal with 2:16 remaining on a play that started after a foul by the Jumbos. Ellie Bavier served a free kick from the right sideline into the penalty area, where Charman's redirection curved into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Alwang made five saves for her fourth shutout of the season, while Bernstein also had five stops for the Jumbos. Tufts held a 15-10 advantage in shots and took six of the game's seven corner kicks.
