Middlebury and WPI Battle To Scoreless Draw

Box Score

Middlebury and Worcester Polytechnic Institute battled through 110 minutes of soccer, but finished in a scoreless draw Tuesday on South Street Field. The Panthers (6-1-5) return to NESCAC play on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. match against Trinity, while the Engineers (7-2-4) host Coast Guard on the same day at noon.

The teams played their way through a defensive-minded opening half, with the hosts registering the lone shot on goal. Middlebury's Drew Goulart directed a header at the Engineer net from inside the penalty area that WPI keeper Rufus Adams collected.

The Panthers had a quality scoring chance just over eight minutes into the second half after an Engineer foul at the top of the restraining area. Ben Potter took the kick, forcing Adams to punch the rising bid over the cross bar. The hosts had another opportunity on a free kick from the top of the box 10 minutes later, as Adams made a diving save to his left to rob Goulart of a goal. WPI had a quality chance in the final seconds of the frame when Luke Reiniger headed a corner by Mike Biando that Panther goalie Ryan Grady corralled.

In the first 10-minute overtime, Middlebury's Jacob Charles had the best scoring look, firing a shot over the net from the top of the box with 1:35 on the clock.

WPI's best scoring chance of the contest came in the second overtime when Franco Bazzini fired a shot from the right side of the penalty area that Grady steered wide.

Grady finished with two saves for the hosts, while Adams had five stops for the Engineers. The Panthers held a 13-10 margin in shots and a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
