Amherst Downs Middlebury

Box Score

Amherst scored once in each of the first three quarters, on its way to a 21-0 win over Middlebury (2-2) on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium. The Mammoths (4-0) return to action when they host Colby next Saturday, while the Panthers will visit Williams.

Amherst took a 7-0 lead on a two-yard rush up the middle by Chase Trunnell at the 5:51 mark of the first quarter. The nine-play, 62-yard drive was sparked by a 41-yard completion from quarterback Ollie Eberth to James O'Regan.

The Mammoths took advantage of a turnover in the second quarter, as Andrew Sommer picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards to the Middlebury 22-yard line. Two plays later, Trunnell scored through the middle from three yards out.

Middlebury looked to capitalize on an Amherst fumble later in the quarter, as Wyllis McKissick picked up the ball and returned it five yards to the Amherst 25-yard line. Unfortunately for the Panthers, they went three-and-out and were forced to punt after a 10-yard loss on a sack.

Late in the half, Middlebury moved the ball to the Amherst 30, aided by a 15-yard penalty on a fourth-and-one, but the drive stalled on downs.

The Mammoths went up 21-0 at the 3:32 mark of the third quarter on a 15-yard scramble to his left by Eberth. The play was led by a great block from Harry Boeschenstein.

Despite a drive starting on their own eight-yard line after a 72-yard punt by Amherst's Henry Atkeson, the Panthers marched the ball down the field early in the fourth quarter. A 42-yard pass from quarterback Will Jernigan to running back Peter Scibilia was the key play on the drive, but the Panthers turned the ball over on a fumble at the Amherst one-yard line.

Jernigan finished 15-32 for 133 yards with an interception, while Scibilia (34 yards) and Drew Jacobs (30 yards) combined for 21 carries. Jacobs caught four passes for 24 yards, while Scibilia earned 53 yards on three receptions. Gordon Pollock led the Middlebury defense with 10 tackles.

Eberth finished 12-20 for 140 yards for the Mammoths, while rushing for 47 yards with a touchdown. Biafra Okoronkwo led the running game with 86 yards on 15 carries, while Bo Berluti caught four passes for 59 yards. Andrew Yamin finished the game with 11 tackles and 3.5 sacks, while John Callahan also had 11 stops.
