Wilhelm's OT Game Winner Lifts Panthers Past Cardinals

Box Score

Henry Wilhelm scored 8:19 into overtime, lifting Middlebury (7-2-3, 4-2-2) to a 1-0 victory over Wesleyan (3-9-0, 2-6-0) on South Street Field. The Panthers return to action on Wednesday night at Castleton, while the Cardinals will host Amherst on Friday evening.

After a scoreless first half, Middlebury turned up the pressure in the first few minutes of the second session. Following a bid from Ben Potter that sailed wide of the net two minutes into the half, a pair of attempts by Daniel O'Grady were both denied by Cardinal goalkeeper Teddy Lowen.

Wesleyan's JJ LaCorte had an open look from 20 yards out in the 59th minute, but his hard rolling shot was saved by Panther keeper Matthew Hyer.

Following a restart in the 72nd minute of play, Middlebury's Raffi Barsamian saw his serve headed on goal by Peter Davis, but Lowen was there to make the save.

The Cardinals best chance to score came on a corner kick with 6:30 remaining in regulation. Cameron Park's corner was briefly cleared before Jack Wolf put a hard shot on goal that Hyer knocked away.

Middlebury came out charging in the overtime with a pair of good looks early. Drew Goulart had a nice opportunity less than a minute into the extra session, but his low, hard shot was denied by Lowen. Just 1:30 later, Michael McFarlane's bid on a header was stopped by Lowen.

The game winner developed as Davis sent the ball into the box from 25 yards out on the left side. Wihelm quickly put a touch on the back before turning and scoring with a shot into the left side of the net from 10 yards out. The tally tied him for the team lead with four this season and was his second game winner in NESCAC play (Amherst).

Middlebury finished the game with a 19-9 shots advantage, leading 7-2 in corner kicks. Hyer made three saves in goal to pick up the win for the hosts. Lowen was solid for the Cardinals, punching out several opportunities, while recording eight saves. The shutout was the sixth of the season for the Panthers.
