Middlebury Hands Williams Its First Loss

Middlebury defeated previously unbeaten Williams for the sixth time in the last seven years with a 21-10 victory over the Ephs (4-1) on Farley/Lamb Field. The Panthers (3-2) return to action next Saturday when they host Bates at 1:00 p.m. on homecoming weekend.

Middlebury took a 7-0 lead over Williams after driving 87 yards on 13 plays in a span of 4:17. Quarterback Will Jernigan had an 18-yard rush and found Conrado Banky for 15 yards setting up the touchdown. Greg Livingston earned his first-career touchdown catch, hauling in a 12-yard pass from Jernigan at the 2:45 mark of the first quarter.

The Panthers scored again on their next possession when Jernigan connected with Banky on an eight-yard scoring strike at 12:31 of the second quarter. The touchdown reception was the 21st of his career for Banky.

Williams got on the board with a 29-yard field goal from Andrew Schreibstein with 10:20 remaining in the second quarter.

Middlebury scored on its third-straight possession, taking a 21-3 lead with 7:00 remaining in the half. A 36-yard rush by Charlie Ferguson and a 31-yard connection from Jernigan to running back Peter Scibilia set up the two-yard keeper by Jernigan.

The Ephs drove to the Middlebury five late in the half, but Ian Blow forced and recovered a fumble to end the threat.

Williams scored on its first possession of the second half on a one-yard touchdown run from Bobby Maimaron, completing a 12-play, 80-yard drive at the 8:05 mark of the third quarter.

The Panther defense held on a big fourth-and-two play from their own 36 early in the fourth. The Ephs defense also held on a fourth down play later in the quarter, when Jernigan was sacked by Luke Apuzzi at the Williams 46-yard line.

Middlebury sealed the game at the 3:33 mark when Matthew Daniel picked off a pass at midfield, as the Panthers were able to run out the clock.

Scibilia earned his second 100-plus yard rushing game of the season, gaining 143 yards on 29 carries, while catching three passes for 35 yards. Jernigan finished with 256 yards of total offense, going 18-31 for 162 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, while rushing 27 times for 94 yards and a touchdown. Banky finished with four receptions for 39 yards and a touchdown, while Jimmy Martinez had four catches for 36 yards.

All seven of Maxwell Rye's punts landed inside the Williams 20, with a long of 52 on the day. Bobby Ritter earned a career-best 12 tackles in the game, while Jonathan Hobart and Kevin Maxwell each had a half dozen.

Maimaron finished with 294 yards of total offense for the Ephs, going 20-38 for 239 yards with a pair of picks, while gaining 55 yards on the ground. Frank Stola led all receivers with nine catches for 88 yards, while Michael DeGasperis gained 83 yards on six catches. Jarrett Wesner and Luke Apuzzi each had 11 tackles to pace the defense.

Middlebury outgained Williams 440-331 and held a 37:31 to 22:29 advantage in time of possession.
