Middlebury's Emma Shumway scored the game's only goal, as the Panthers (1-0) defeated Colby-Sawyer (1-1) in the team's season-opener on Dragone Field. Middlebury returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Connecticut College at noon, while the Chargers entertain Keene State at 1:00 p.m.

Middlebury had a great scoring chance just over a minute into the game when Virginia Charman played a ball ahead to Ellie Greenberg. Colby-Sawyer keeper Sam Mitchell (10 saves) came out to meet her at the 18, making a save before a follow-up attempt by Shumway was blocked.

The Panthers had an opportunity late in the half when Eliza Robinson's hard cross from the right side just missed the net.

Shumway's goal came at the 64:21 mark, her 20th career point. Alex Barber centered a pass that tipped a defender before falling to the feet of Shumway 12 yards out. She quickly fired a shot into the right side of the net to put her team on top 1-0.

The Panthers threatened again in the 81st minute when Greenberg one-touched a cross from Caitlin Magruder that was denied by Mitchell.

Middlebury held a 22-1 shots advantage in the game, as Ursula Alwang was forced to make just one save to earn her fourth career shutout.
