Middlebury's Emma Shumway scored the game's only goal 64:31 into the contest, lifting the Panthers (3-1, 1-1) to a 1-0 victory over 10th-ranked Amherst (2-2, 1-1) Saturday on Dragone Field. Middlebury returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Castleton at 4:30 p.m., while Amherst hosts Wentworth on Sunday.

The first half saw few scoring attempts, with the best coming by Middlebury in the 26th minute. Adrianna Gildner ripped a shot from 25 yards out that hooked toward the left corner before deflecting off the crossbar.

The Panthers threatened again in the 52nd minute when Katherine Hobbs' shot from 18 yards away on the right was denied by a diving save from Amherst keeper Chelsea Cutler.

Amherst nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute with a pair of great opportunities. Hannah Guzzi cut down the left side and created some space before her shot was denied by Panther keeper Ursula Alwang, who came out to cut off the angle. The rebound went to Amherst's Sloan Askins, but her shot at an apparent open goal was knocked away by Panther defender Amanda Haik.

The game's only goal came at the 64:31 when Shumway netted her team-leading third of the season. A corner kick from the left corner by Amanda Hotvedt was touched to the middle by Gildner from the goal line. Shumway was there for the quick one-touch past Cutler for the 1-0 lead.

Amherst threatened again in the final three minutes, but Laura Greer's good look was broken up by Middlebury defender Clare Robinson.

Middlebury finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots, while holding a 7-3 lead in corner kicks. Alwang made three saves in her first career start to pick up the win. Cutler made a pair of stops for Amherst.
