Wyatt French and David Cromwell of the Middlebury men's squash team earned consolation final victories in the Molloy Cup 'A' and 'B' brackets during the College Squash Association (CSA) Individual Championships. Matches were contested at The Squash Club at Chelsea Piers in Stamford, Connecticut. French earned the consolation title in 'A' bracket with a 3-1 record, while Cromwell secured his championship in the 'B' bracket.
French was matched up with Affeeq Ismail of Trinity in his opening-round match. French won the first game 11-5, but Ismail was victorious in the next three for the win (5-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-3). In the consolation bracket, French cruised in three games over Brian Hamilton of Dickinson (11-6, 11-6, 11-8) in the quarterfinals and Justin Restivo of MIT (11-8, 11-7, 12-10) during the semifinals. In the 'A' final, French capped off his junior year with a three-game victory over Williams' Galen Squiers (11-5, 11-5, 11-4).
In the 'B' bracket, Cromwell lost his first match in four games to Princeton's Cody Cortes (11-6, 11-6, 11-13, 11-7) and was placed in the consolation draw. During the quarterfinal round, CJ Smith from Colby won two of the first three games, but Cromwell came back and won the fourth as well as the decisive fifth games to advance (11-6, 10-12, 3-11, 11-8, 11-5).
Squaring off with Jack Blasberg from Brown in the semifinals, Cromwell again lost two of the opening three games, but he rebounded for the five-game triumph (14-12, 6-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-6).
In the final, Cromwell and Lawrence Kuhn from Rochester split the first two games by identical 11-8 scores. Cromwell grabbed the title with 11-6 and 11-5 victories in games three and four.
