Football Cruises Past Hamilton

Middlebury (6-1) outgained Hamilton 468-199 on its way to a 45-10 win over the Continentals (2-5) on Steuben Field. The victory was Middlebury's 21st straight over the Continentals, as the Panthers now hold a 44-15 all-time advantage in the "Rocking Chair Classic" series. Middlebury concludes its season next weekend when it hosts Tufts at 12:30 p.m. With one game to play and no tie-breakers, Trinity sits atop the NESCAC standings with a 7-0 mark, followed by Middlebury, Tufts and Wesleyan, who are all 6-1.

Middlebury scored on its opening drive when quarterback Jared Lebowitz found James Burke for a 13-yard scoring strike. The Panthers settled for a 20-yard field goal from Carter Massengill on their next drive, taking a 10-0 lead with 4:46 remaining in the first quarter.

The Continentals got on the board with 7:19 remaining in the half when Robert Morris booted a 40-yard field goal to make it a 10-3 contest.

Middlebury took advantage of a turnover late in the half, after an interception by Bobby Ritter. The Panthers moved 74 yards in 1:20, capped by a two-yard keeper from Lebowitz for a 17-3 lead heading into the half. Lebowitz connected with Jimmy Martinez (17 and 11 yards), Burke (18 yards) and Conrado Banky (24 yards) on the drive.

Middlebury took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 75 yards on eight plays. A 32-yard connection with Martinez helped set up a 11-yard touchdown pass from Lebowitz to Banky to make it a 24-3 game.

The teams exchanged four punts before Wesley Becton picked off a pass, giving Middlebury the ball on the Hamilton 48-yard line. Three plays later, Lebowitz connected with Banky from 10 yards out for a 31-3 advantage with 4:31 remaining in the third quarter.

The duo connected again on Middlebury's next drive, this time from 30 yards out as the Panthers took a sizeable 38-3 lead. 

Middlebury scored its final touchdown of the game with 6:39 left in the contest, as Matt Cardew scored on a two-yard rush. The short drive was set up by a fumbled punt that was recovered by Ritter at the Hamilton six.

The Continentals closed the scoring on a five-yard touchdown pass from Cole Freeman to Joe Schmidt in the closing minutes, making it a 45-10 final.

Lebowitz finished the day 34-51 for 412 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Burke caught a career-and game-high 10 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, while Banky finished with three scores on nine catches for 154 yards. Martinez hauled in six passes for a career-high 88 yards in the game. Diego Meritus finished with 42 yards of total offense, while Drew Jacobs had 50.

The Middlebury defense saw 23 different players record a tackle, as the group forced six turnovers on the afternoon. Robert Wood led the effort with six tackles and two sacks to go along with a forced fumble and a pass break-up. Kevin Hopsicker, Kevin Maxwell and Martin Williams each added four stops.

Kenny Gray went 7-21 for Hamilton, throwing for 40 yards with two interceptions. Cole Freeman finished 11-18 with three picks and 99 yards. Charles Ensley paced the Continental receivers with six catches for 62 yards. Matt Glebus led all tacklers with 10 to go along with a sack, while Colby Jones added nine.
