The 15th-ranked Middlebury men's squash team earned a hard-fought 5-4 victory Friday evening over #14 Navy in a match played at Yale for the Panthers' final match of the season. Middlebury (10-3) returns to the court on Friday when it competes in the NESCAC Tournament hosted by Trinity.
In the narrow win, the Midshipmen raced out to a 3-1 lead with wins at #2, #8 and #6. Middlebury' point in that stretch came from
Andrew Cadienhead at #4 by scores of 11-9, 11-6, 10-12 and 12-10 over Bill Kacergis.
Trailing by two, Middlebury won the next three matches.
Robert Rohrbach was the first to finish, recording a three-game win at #9 (11-4, 11-4, 11-9) against Alex Patricolo, while
Harrison Croll tied the match with a four-game victory in the fifth slot of the ladder (11-7, 11-5, 2-11, 11-8) over Randy Beck.
Ben Krant put Middlebury up by a point via a marathon five-game triumph (11-3, 5-11, 12-10, 6-11, 11-7) versus Will Walker, but the Midshipmen tied the match at 4-4 with a five-game win in the top spot.
The decision came down to the last match on court at #3 between Middlebury's
Wyatt French and Navy's Reed Whitney. Whitney took a 2-1 advantage with 11-9 wins in games two and three after French secured the opening game, 11-8. French evened the match with a 13-11 win in game four. All tied at 7-7 in the decisive game, French scored four of the final five points for an 11-8 victory and secured the team win for Middlebury.
