The 17th-ranked Middlebury men's squash team captured the Summers Cup for the fifth time in the last seven years after earning three wins at the CSA Team Championships in matches played at four different sites across Connecticut. The Panthers finish the season ranked 17th-nationally with an overall record of 15-7.
Middlebury opened play on Friday by cruising to an 8-1 win over #24 Amherst. Straight-set wins were posted at #3 through #7 by Wyatt French, Harrison Croll, William Kurth, Will Hanley and David Cromwell. Andrew Cadienhead recorded a four-set win in the second slot, while Ben Krant and Robert Galluccio both won in five sets.
In Saturday's semifinal contest, the Panthers topped #20 Wesleyan by a score of 6-3. Cadienhead eased to a straight-set win at #2, while Hanley, Cromwell and Krant were victors at #6 through #8. Galluccio hung on for a five-set win at #9, while French saved four match points in his five-set win at #4.
The Panthers were matched up against #19 Western Ontario in Sunday's final, who rallied from down 4-2 for a 5-4 victory in Saturday's semifinals against Brown. Krant tallied a three-set win at #8, including a 12-10 score in the final set. Each of the remaining five Middlebury wins happened in four sets. French at #3, Kurth at #5, Hanley in the #6 slot, Cromwell at #7 and Galluccio rounded things out with a victory at #9.
Selected individuals will compete from February 26 through March 1 at the CSA Individual Championships.
