Middlebury Men's Hockey Shuts Out Amherst, 2-0

Box Score

The Middlebury men's hockey team posted a 2-0 shutout at #5 Amherst on Saturday, as the Panthers (3-2-3, 3-0-3) remained unbeaten in conference play. Middlebury scored once in each of the first two periods and received 33 saves from netminder Stephen Klein. The Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 2, when they face SUNY Canton in the opening round of the Middlebury Holiday Classic.

The Panthers netted the eventual game-winning goal at the 13:14 mark of the first period on a score by Max Greenwald. The senior received a pass along the side boards from Evan Neugold, and wristed a shot through traffic that snuck past Amherst goalie Connor Girard on the near post.

Middlebury doubled its lead in the second period on Mark Lyman's second of the season.

In the third period, the Purple & White (3-2-3, 2-1-1) went on the power play at the 9:02 mark, as Thomas Lindstrom got a good look at cutting the Amherst deficit in half. Klein denied the scoring attempt and moments later, the Panther goalie stopped Phil Johansson's blast from the point.

In the final minute, Amherst pulled Girard in favor of an extra skater, but Klein thwarted a pair of close-range attempts by Chris Roll and Conor Brown. The Panther defense also blocked three others in the waning seconds to seal the win for Middlebury.

Girard finished with 33 saves for Amherst, as each team went 0-2 on the power play.
