Bonini Scores Twice As Men's Soccer Tops Castleton

Box Score

Tyler Bonini scored twice, including the game-winner at the 66:50 mark as Middlebury (8-2-1) picked up a 2-1 win over Castleton (9-5-1) on Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers now lead the all-time series 15-1 after a Spartan victory a year ago. Middlebury returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Trinity at 2:00 p.m., while Castleton entertains SUNY-Canton at 7:00 p.m. on the same day.

Middlebury grabbed a 1-0 advantage just 1:46 into the contest on the second of the year from Bonini. Peter Davis sent a ball toward goal that was touched by Daniel O'Grady to the feet of Bonini, who knocked it into an open goal on the far side.

Castleton threatened in the 17th minute, as Blake Hart's header off a Nihad Basic feed was tipped over the crossbar by Panther keeper Jeremy Yeager, who was making his first career start.

The Spartans cashed in moments later when Solo Felekeni tied the game at the 18:06 mark. Basic's corner kick skipped off a foot before coming to Felekeni, who found the far side to knot the game at 1-1.

Luis Echeverria had a chance for Middlebury in the 24th minute, but his blast from the top of the box went just high, as did Basic's shot for Castleton in the 30th minute. The Panthers nearly took a 2-1 advantage just before halftime, but Amir Pasic made a diving save on a header from Greg Conrad after a lengthy throw from Tim Ogle.

Conrad had another good look 58 minutes into the contest with a low, hard shot, but it was denied by Pasic. O'Grady later found Conrad in transition in the 65th minute, but his one-touch shot was high.

Bonini's game-winner came with 23:10 remaining on a great play started by Adam Glaser on the left side. Glaser carried the ball in and crossed it to Conrad who headed the ball toward the far side. Bonini was there to re-head the ball into the back of the net, giving the Panthers a lead they would not relinquish.

Middlebury held a 22-7 shots advantage in the game, leading 7-4 in corner kicks. Yeager made three saves in goal to pick up his first career win, while Pasic made seven stops for Castleton.
