Men's Soccer Shutout Streak Stopped at Five Matches With Road Loss at Colby

Box Score

Middlebury saw its shutout streak snapped at five matches as the Panthers (5-1-1, 2-1-1) suffered a 3-0 road loss at Colby (5-3, 1-3) on Saturday afternoon. The Mules' goal at the 70:08 mark ended a streak of 540:28 for the Panthers without allowing a marker. Middlebury returns to action at Williams on Wednesday.

Colby's first goal actually came from Middlebury when a cross by Matt Giron was knocked in by a defender. After not scoring in its first three league games, Colby gladly took the score and some momentum.

About seven minutes later, Yinka Onayemi headed in a cross from Matt Ayers for the key insurance goal 77:12 into the contest.

With Middlebury pushing up, the Mules were able to get a third goal on the second of the day from Onayemi. Evan Dwyer got his first collegiate point with the assist on the play.

Colby goalkeeper Peter Quayle recorded the shutout with eight saves in a game where Middlebury had a 16-10 shot advantage. Greg Sydor made a pair of saves for the Panthers.

The victor of the game is awarded the Michael P. Russell Cup, which was established in memory of Michael Russell, Middlebury College class of 1998, who passed away in 2011 at the young age of 36, leaving behind a wife and two daughters. Michael had siblings attend both Middlebury and Colby, setting up the tradition.
