The Middlebury men's squash team sent three players to the Division III Individual Championships hosted by Wesleyan University to close out the first semester of competition. Andrew Jung competed as one of 16 players in the 'A' bracket, while William Kurth and David Cromwell were two of 24 competitors looking for a 'B' bracket championship.
In the 'A' bracket, Jung was seeded third and ran into some tough competitors. He won his opening match with an 11-4, 11-5, 9-11, 12-10 victory over Connecticut College's Brian Mullen, but dropped his next two matches.
During play in the 'B' bracket, Cromwell advanced all the way to the semifinals with wins over Connecticut College's Daniel Reisman (11-2, 11-3, 11-6), the #5 seed in Williams' Galen Squiers (11-4, 11-13, 11-9, 11-3) and Wesleyan's Chris Hart (11-7, 7-11, 13-11, 10-12, 11-9). He then fell to eventual champion and top-seeded Nabil Saleem (11-9, 12-10, 11-5) of Bates.
Kurth defeated Connecticut College's John Dunham (11-6, 11-7, 11-2) in his opening match, but fell in the next round to the #3 seed in Bates' Caran Arora (11-7, 8-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9). Slotted into the consolation bracket, Kurth recorded three-straight wins over Bowdoin's George Cooley (12-14, 11-8, 14-12, 9-11, 12-10), Connecticut College's Reisman (11-5, 11-8, 11-4) and Bates' Carlos Ames (6-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7) to put him into the final. He was then matched up with Squiers, who defeated him by scores of 11-8, 9-11, 11-5 and 11-5.
The Panthers have over a month off from competition for finals and the holiday break before returning to action on Friday, January 9 at M.I.T. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Middlebury will play a pair of matches the following day at Williams against Bowdoin and Colby.
