Women's Soccer Falls To St. Lawrence

Box Score

Kaleigh White scored two goals during a span of 4:31 in the first half to lead St. Lawrence (8-4) to a 3-1 road win over Middlebury (6-4) on Dragone Field. The meeting between the two squads was the first since 1994. The Panthers return to action on Saturday at Trinity, while the Saints will host RIT on the same day.

St. Lawrence came out strong with three corner kicks in the first few minutes of the game, but could not get on the board.

Middlebury scored its only goal just 6:43 into the contest, the first of the year for Carter Talgo. Adrianna Gildner crossed a ball from the right side that hit a defender's back and went off the far post. Talgo was there to gather the rebound and finish for the 1-0 lead.

The Panthers nearly struck again in the eighth minute, but Claire Nishioka's shot following a centering pass from the left wing by Jamie Soroka went just wide right.

White's first goal came after she received a lengthy 50-yard pass from Hannah Merriam. She won a foot race to the ball and broke in all alone against Middlebury keeper Emily Eslinger. White saw a hole and quickly shot the ball into the left side of the net to tie the game at 34:13.

White struck again at the 38:44 mark, carrying the ball down the field 25 yards before cutting into the box. She created just enough space to get off a shot, tucking the ball into the goal off the right post from the left side, 15 yards out.

St. Lawrence increased its lead to 3-1 just 3:34 into the second half with its third goal in as many shots. On a set piece from 30 yards out, Caroline Crandall made a short pass to Emily DePoy, who blasted a shot over the wall and into the top right corner of the net.

Middlebury put some pressure on when Moria Sloan had some room on the left side, but saw her quality attempt saved by Kelsey West in the 57th minute. Soroka had a good look in the box in the 64th minute, but her attempt was stopped when it deflected off West and went wide.

The Saints nearly padded their lead in the 77th minute, but a great cross from the left side was knocked just over the crossbar by White in her bid for the hat-trick.

Middlebury held a 17-11 shots advantage in the game, while St. Lawrence owned a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. West made six saves in goal for the win, while Eslinger made two stops in suffering her first career loss (3-1) for the Panthers.
