The Middlebury women's soccer team picked up three key NESCAC points in the standings as it defeated Bates 2-0 on Dragone Field. The Panthers (8-5, 4-4) are back at it tomorrow as they visit Williams, who is currently tied for first place. The Bobcats (7-6, 3-5) are idle for a week before they host the Ephs next Saturday.

Middlebury had a great chance to score in the third minute of play. Jamie Soroka crossed a ball that was headed off the left post by Claire Nishioka.

The Panthers broke through later in the first half when Nishioka netted her fourth of the year at the 22:45 mark. Soroka made a beautiful crossing pass from deep in the right corner that Nishioka was able to tap into the back of the net.

The lead increased to 2-0 with the first of the year from Moria Sloan 33:28 into the half. Katlyn Casey found Sloan with some space, as she lofted a shot over the goalkeepers head and into the back of the net.    

The Panthers led 2-0 heading into the halftime break and neither team put on substantial pressure in the final 45 minutes of the contest.

Middlebury held a slim 8-7 shots advantage in the game, with each team taking three corner kicks. Emily Eslinger made a pair of saves in goal to earn her fourth shutout of the season, while Sarah McCarthy made two stops for the Bobcats.
