Men's Soccer Earns Fourth Straight Shutout

Box Score

Tyler Macnee netted a pair of goals to lead Middlebury to a 2-0 win over Castleton State in a non-conference game on Tuesday. The Panthers (4-2-3) return to action at Hamilton on Saturday, while the Spartans (6-4-1) host UMaine-Farmington on the same day. Middlebury has now gone five games without a loss (3-0-2) with four shutouts.

The first half was quiet with the Panthers having a couple of scoring chances at the 15 and 20-minute marks. Macnee broke through late in the first half with 2:01 remaining to give his team a 1-0 advantage. He received a long cross by Josh Lyvers and then went one-on-on with Casteleton keeper Nate Koenemann (3 saves) for the tally.

Macnee netted his fourth of the year and 27th of his career just 5:19 into the second session to make it a 2-0 game. Jon Portman's blast was stopped by a diving save from Koenemann, with Macnee there to pound the rebound high into the net.

Middlebury had a great chance to add to their lead at 61:30, but Robbie Redmond's penalty kick went high to the left.

The Panthers threatened a bit down the stretch, emerging with the 2-0 victory. Middlebury held a 15-5 shots advantage in the contest as Tim Cahill made three saves in goal to earn his fifth shutout of the season.
