Middlebury College remained unbeaten and un-scored upon Wednesday evening with a 4-0 defeat of Plymouth State University in a non-conference men's soccer battle at Panther Field.
Junior Otis Pitney and senior Carson Cornbrooks each tallied their first goals of the season for the visitors as Middlebury, ranked third in New England and 19th nationally, went up 2-0 in the first half. The Middlebury defense allowed just four PSU shots en route to the seventh shutout in as many games, improving to 7-0-0 on the season. Plymouth State suffered its second straight whitewash and dipped to 2-5-1.
Pitney put Middlebury on the board 18 minutes into the game with a splendid individual effort and scored with a shot from the top of the box off the inside of the left goal post. Cornbrooks extended the margin to 2-0 when he redirected a crossing pass from junior Robbie Redmond.
Middlebury pulled away in the second half with two unanswered goals. Senior Jake Edwards put one in off the cross bar at the 68-minute mark, and junior Martin Drolet finished off the scoring seven minutes later, converting a 2-on-1 with sophomore Brett Brazier.
Tim Cahill needed to make just one save to post the shutout for Middlebury. PSU senior Dan Salzer made five saves at the other end, including a superb diving stop late in the second half.
Plymouth State returns to Little East Conference play this Saturday with a visit to Western Connecticut State University for a 12 noon kickoff. Middlebury is back to the NESCAC slate Saturday, traveling to Colby College for a 1:30 p.m. tilt.
