Colby Tops Middlebury

Colby improved to 2-0 on the season, while Middlebury fell to 0-2 as the Mules picked up a 20-7 win in the Panther's home-opener. Middlebury will play at Amherst next Saturday, while Colby visits Wesleyan.

Colby scored on its opening drive as they marched 76 yards on six plays for the touchdown. John Bateman found tight end Roddy Ames 15 yards down field, with Ames carrying the ball another 40 plus yards for the 56-yard scoring play.

The Mules had a chance to increase the lead on their next possession, but John Goss' 34-yard field goal attempt sailed wide. Colby was again driving late in the quarter, but Ames' pass was picked off by Middlebury's Scott Secor at the 21-yard line, ending the drive.

Leading 7-0 at the half, Colby doubled the lead with five minutes remaining in the third quarter as Mike Bracco picked off a pass and returned it 53 yards for the score.

The lead grew to 20-0 in the fourth quarter as Bateman again found Ames, this time for an 11-yard touchdown strike, capping off a nine-play, 47-yard drive.

Middlebury's special teams put the team on the scoreboard with 8:21 remaining, as a blocked punt by Secor was picked up by Nathan Shreve and carried seven yards for the score. The Panthers would have three more possessions in the game, but were unable to cut into the Colby lead.
