Mike Keenan found Mike Murray for a five-yard scoring strike with 1:12 left to play to lift Middlebury to its first win of the season with a 17-14 road victory over previously unbeaten Amherst. Keenan connect on six of seven passes for 51 yards on the game-winning, 13-play, 86-yard drive. Eric Shanley chipped in with 21 rushing yards in the series.

Amherst took a 7-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter with a short touchdown run. Middlebury tied the game late in the second quarter when Mike Murray blocked and recovered a punt before he scampered 36 yards for the touchdown. A 27-yard field goal from Andy Bohlin gave the Panthers a 10-7 lead early in the fourth quarter before the Jeffs came back to take a 14-10 lead on a short rush with 54 seconds left in the third quarter.

Keenan completed 18 of 28 passes on the day for 197 yards, including a touchdown. Shanley carried the ball 25 times for 81 yards, while Ryan Armstrong led the team in receptions with six for 39 yards. Tom Cleaver caught five passes for 95 yards, while Murray had two, including the game-winning touchdown catch along with the blocked punt. Rookie Scott Secor led the defense with 17 tackles and an interception, while Craig Pittman had 11 tackles and an interception to end Amherst's final drive with 1:01 remaining.
