Volleyball Opens Season With Split at UMass Boston Tourney

The Middlebury volleyball team opened the 2014 season with a 1-1 performance at the UMass Boston Tournament. The Panthers fell to Whitman (4-3) in four sets before rebounding to ease past Western Connecticut State in three sets. Middlebury plays twice more tomorrow against the host Beacons as well as Salisbury at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.

In the opening match, Whitman grabbed the first two sets against the Panthers by scores of 25-15 and 25-21. Middlebury won the third set by a 25-21 tally, but Whitman secured the win via a score of 25-21. Olivia Kolodka paced the attack with 12 kills and a pair of service aces, while Alice Roberts added nine kills. Hannah Blackburn dished out 37 assists.

Defensively, four Panthers recorded double-digit dig totals led by Lizzy Reed with 21. Charlotte Devine added 14 digs, while Blackburn chipped in with 11 for a double-double.

Against Western Connecticut State, the Panthers handed the Colonials their first loss of the season (10-1) by set scores of 25-21, 29-27 and 25-20. O. Kolodka led three in double figures with 15 kills, while younger sister Emily Kolodka finished with 12 and Melanie English added 10. Blackburn set the offense handing out 42 assists.

Reed once again led multiple players with double-digit dig totals, finishing with 22. E. Kolodka posted a double-double with 19 digs. English recorded two block solos and three block assists in the win.
