The Middlebury women's volleyball team opened up its 2012 season with a split on day one of the Endicott Tournament. The Panthers dropped their opener 3-0 (23, 24, 17) to UMass.-Boston, before coming from two sets down to defeat the host school, 26-28, 22-25, 25-14, 27-14, 15-10.
Against UMass.-Boston, Amy Hart and Megan Jarchow paced the team with eight kills apiece, while Caitlin Barrett (24) and Julia Gibbs (13) were the leaders in digs. Gibbs added 24 assists in the opener.
In the five-set marathon against Endicott, Hart finished with 17 kills, followed by Jarchow with 14 and Madeline Firestone, who earned a dozen. Barrett (26), Gibbs (14) and Lizzy Reed (10) led the squad in digs, while Gibbs dished out 53 assists.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday at Endicott, taking on Plymouth State and Susquehanna.
