  • Volleyball Players Earn NEWVA Honors
    November 28, 2011
    Three members of the Middlebury College women’s volleyball team were honored when the NEWVA (New England Women’s Volleyball Association) announced its post-season awards. Senior Jane Handel (Evanston, Ill.) and junior Caitlin Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) were second-team All-Region selections, while Handel and senior Elissa Goeke (Chevy Chase, Md.) were chosen to play in the Senior Classic.

    Junior Caitlin Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) has earned New England All-Region honors from the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association), while being named an honorable mention All-American nominee. Junior Julia Gibbs (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Megan Jarchow (Cos Cob, Conn.) were both recognized as All-Region honorable mention selections.
  • Volleyball Falls In NCAA Regional Final

    The Middlebury women’s volleyball team saw its season come to an end with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-18) loss to Cortland State (42-1) in an NCAA Regional final at Clarkson. The Panthers finish the season with a 23-9 mark, advancing deeper into the NCAA Tournament than any team in school history.

    With a strong attack coming from all angles, Middlebury hit .297 in its NCAA New York Regional semifinal match against Skidmore College, and swept the Thoroughbreds in three sets, 25-21, 25-16, 25-23, Saturday afternoon at Clarkson University’s Alumni Gymnasium. Middlebury improved to 23-8 overall and advanced to the NCAA New York Regional Final at 4:00 pm on Sunday against the winner of Cortland and Clarkson.

    With 10 kills each from Megan Jarchow and Jane Handel, Middlebury College rallied from an early deficit in the first set and then closed out Colby-Sawyer College in three straight sets, 25-23, 25-21, 25-11, in the first round of the NCAA New York Regionals Friday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium on the campus of Clarkson University.

The group are preparing to lead the Panthers into this weekend’s NCAA Regional at Clarkson.

    The Middlebury College women’s volleyball team will make its second straight and third overall NCAA Tournament appearance, when the Panthers travel to Clarkson for an NCAA Regional. The matches will take place Friday-Sunday, November 11-13, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

    Making its second straight appearance in the NESCAC Championship match, Middlebury was unable to repeat as champions, falling to Bowdoin, 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-17). The Polar Bears win their first league title, improving to 26-2 overall. The Panthers fall to 21-8 and will hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

    Defending champion Middlebury dispatched Connecticut College 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-18) in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Volleyball quarterfinals on Friday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.The third-seeded Panthers improve to 20-7 this fall and will face second-seeded Tufts in the semifinals of the championship on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

    Hoping to defend their NESCAC crown this weekend will be the third-seeded Panthers of Middlebury (19-7, 7-3 NESCAC). The Panthers put together a remarkable run last year, winning their first title since taking back-to-back championships in 1997-98 and finishing with a 25-6 record, the second most wins in program history.

    Middlebury wrapped up its regular season with a 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 24-26, 15-9) at St. Michaels. The Panthers won for the eighth time in nine tries, improving to 19-7, while the Purple Knights are now 14-17.

    Megan Jarchow had 17 kills to lead Middlebury to a 3-0 (16, 25, 9) win over Hamilton on Friday night at this weekend’s NESCAC Quad hosted by Amherst. With the first set knotted at nine, Middlebury mounted a 10-4 run, building a six-point cushion.
  • Volleyball Goes 2-1 At Hall Of Fame Tourney

    The Middlebury women's volleyball team earned a 2-1 mark at the 2011 Hall of Fame Invitational hosted by Smith and Mount Holyoke. On Friday night, the Panthers opened with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 13-25, 25-20) win over Wellesley. Saturday, the Panthers made it five straight wins with a 3-0 (23, 32, 22) victory over M.I.T., before falling 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 22-25, 17-25) to Springfield in the finale. Jane Handel was named to the all-tournament team.
  • Volleyball Takes Five Set Match At Plymouth

    Senior Jane Handel recorded a match-high 21 kills and a team-leading 22 digs Wednesday evening as Middlebury College pulled out a 3-2 victory over Plymouth State University in a non-conference women’s volleyball match at Foley Gymnasium.

    The Middlebury women's volleyball team played three NESCAC matches at Colby over the weekend. The Panthers opened on Friday night with a tight 3-2 (24-26, 25-5, 25-23, 19-25, 17-15) loss to Bowdoin. Middlebury bounced back on Saturday, earning a 3-1 win over Bates and a 3-0 victory over Colby.
  • Raunecker Wins 300th As Volleyball Topples Skidmore

    Middlebury head coach Sarah Raunecker won her 300th career match as the Panthers (10-5) topped Skidmore (15-8) by a score of 3-0 (12, 18, 22) in Pepin Gym. Raunecker, who took over the program in its second year of existence in '95, now owns a career mark of 300-169.

    The Middlebury women's volleyball team split a pair of NESCAC matches at Tufts on Friday and Saturday. Friday night, the Panthers picked up a 3-0 (24, 14, 22) win over Connecticut College, before falling to the host school 3-0 (13, 15, 12) on Saturday afternoon.

    Middlebury won its only home NESCAC match of the season as the Panthers topped Amherst 3-0 (19, 18, 9) in Pepin Gym. The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they host Keene State at 3:00, with an Amherst/Keene match-up preceding at noon.

    The Middlebury women's volleyball team moved to 2-0 at home as they swept Colby-Sawyer 3-0 (11, 18, 10) in Pepin Gym. The Panthers return to action Friday night at 8:00, when they host Amherst in a key NESCAC battle.

    The Panther women's volleyball team played a pair of matches at the Amherst Classic over the weekend. On Friday night, Middlebury fell to 5-4 on the year with a 3-2 (16-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-20, 15-10) loss at the hands of Coast Guard. The Panthers bounced back on Saturday, topping Brandeis 3-0 (10, 20, 21).

    Middlebury cruised to a three-set victory at Union Tuesday night, earning a 3-0 (16, 18, 20) road win. Sarah Studwell led the team with 11 kills, while Megan Jarchow added seven. Caitlin Barrett picked up 16 digs in the victory, while Julia Gibbs had 25 assists.

    The Middlebury women’s volleyball team opened its season with a 2-2 mark at the Endicott Invitational Tournament. The Panthers lost to St. Mary’s on Friday 3-2 (14-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-13, 12-15) before bouncing back with a 3-2 (25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12) victory over the host school.
