The Middlebury College women's volleyball team increased its winning streak to eight games on Friday night with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-12) win over Wesleyan at Amherst. The Panthers weren't as fortunate on Saturday, falling 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-10) to Conn. College and 3-2 (25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 21-25, 16-14) to Trinity in a pair of matches at Amherst. Middlebury now sits at 15-5 overall, 6-2 in NESCAC play.
On Friday night at Amherst, Middlebury opened the weekend with a win over Wesleyan. First-year player Megan Jarchow (Cos Cob, Conn.) led the offense with 11 kills, junior Elissa Goeke (Chevy Chase, Md.) added 10, while sophomore Julia Gibbs (Houston, Texas) chipped in with eight. Junior Jane Handel (Evanston, Ill.) and sophomore Caitlin Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) each had 16 digs, Goeke had four blocks, while senior Lauren Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) earned 36 assists.
Middlebury dropped two heart-breakers on Saturday, dropping five-set contests to Conn. and Trinity. Against the Camels, Handel (14 kills) and Gibbs (11 kills) led the offense, with Gibbs adding three service aces. Handel earned 18 digs, C. Barrett had 17, while L. Barrett dished out 44 assists.
Handel had a big match with 20 digs and 17 digs against Trinity. Gibbs earned 16 kills in the contest, while Jarchow had a dozen. C. Barrett picked up 30 digs in the contest, junior Caroline Cordle (Atlanta, Ga.) added 15, while L. Barrett had 53 assists.
