The Middlebury College women's volleyball team opened up the 2010 season with four matches played at the Endicott Tournament. The Panthers defeated Eastern Connecticut on Friday night 3-0, before falling to the host school by a score of 3-2. On Saturday, Middlebury opened with a 3-0 victory over Emmanuel, before ending the weekend with a 3-0 win over Bowdoin. Senior Jane Handel (Evanston, Ill.) was named to the All-Tournament team.
In the season-opener, the Panthers cruised to a pair of victories in sets one and two, before earning a 27-25 win in the third set. Handel paced the offense with nine kills, while junior Caroline Cordle (Atlanta, Ga.) added seven. Sophomore Caitlin Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) earned 17 digs in the match, while her senior sister Lauren had 10 to go along with 28 assists.
Later that night, the Panthers lost a five-set battle with Endicott, losing two of the four sets by a total of five points. Handel earned 15 digs, first-year player Megan Jarchow (Cos Cob, Conn.) had 12, while sophomore Julia Gibbs (Houston, Texas) earned 10. C. Barrett earned 29 digs, Handel picked up 26 with three blocks, while L. Barrett had 49 assists.
Middlebury picked up a 3-0 win over Emmanuel to open play on Saturday. Jarchow (9), Gibbs (9) and Handel (7) paced the team in digs, while Handel added four service aces. C. Barrett picked up 17 digs, while L. Barrett had 37 assists.
The weekend concluded with a 3-0 win over NESCAC foe Bowdoin. Handel (11) and Jarchow (10) led the team in kills, while Handel added four service aces and L. Barrett had 34 assists. Handel (23), Gibbs (15) and C. Barrett (13) paced the squad in digs.
