  • Volleyball Players Earn Post-Season Honors
    November 15, 2010
    Several members of the women's volleyball team were honored when the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) and NEWVA (New England Women's Volleyball Association) announced their post-season honors. Junior Jane Handel (Evanston, Ill.), sophomore Julia Gibbs (Houston, Texas) and senior Lauren Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) all were named to the AVCA New England All-Region team.

    The Middlebury women's volleyball team saw its season come to an end as the Panthers fell 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 29-27) to UMass.-Boston in an NCAA second-round game at Springfield. Middlebury ends its season at 25-6, second most wins in school history. The Panthers also earned their first NCAA Tournament victory in '10, defeating Polytechnic 3-0 on Friday.

    The Middlebury College women's volleyball team will make its second NCAA Tournament appearance, and first since '98, when the Panthers travel to Springfield for an NCAA Regional. The matches will take place Friday-Sunday, November 12-14, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

    Middlebury College women's volleyball player Megan Jarchow (TBA) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week. Jarchow had a big weekend to lead the Panthers to their first NESCAC title since '98. The rookie led the team with 4.0 kills and a .349 hitting percentage.

    Middlebury won its third NESCAC Championship and first since '98 with a 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 26-24) victory over Tufts at Amherst. The Panthers earn an automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Tournament, improving to 24-5 on the season. The Jumbos fall to 22-10 on the year.

    Second-seeded Middlebury advanced in the NESCAC Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-21) win over seventh-seeded Trinity College Friday evening in Amherst College's LeFrak Gymnasium. The Bantams' season comes to a close at 16-8 (5-5 NESCAC), while the Panthers (22-5, 8-2) will take on Williams in the semifinals on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

    With a 3-1 victory at Hamilton Saturday afternoon, Amherst College secured the number-one seed in the upcoming NESCAC Volleyball Championship. The top-seeded Jeffs will host the annual conference tournament beginning on Friday, Nov. 5, with quarterfinal action set to begin at 5:00 p.m.

    Middlebury College women's volleyball player Jane Handel (Evanston, Ill.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week for the third time this season. The junior led the Panthers to a pair of victories and their highest finish ever in the NESCAC standings as she averaged 3.29 kills and 5.14 digs per set while hitting at a .358 clip.

    The Middlebury volleyball team wrapped-up its regular season by taking a pair of NESCAC matches at Hamilton. The Panthers defeated the host school 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-14) on Friday night, before earning a 3-1 (25-15, 18-25, 25-17, 25-22) win over Williams on Saturday. Middlebury moves to 21-5 overall, finishing second in the NESCAC with an 8-2 record.  
  • Barrett Named NESCAC Player Of The Week

    Middlebury College women's volleyball player Lauren Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week. Barrett earned Tournament MVP honors at the Hall of Fame Invitational over the weekend, as the Panthers went 3-0 to win the Gold Bracket. In a 4-0 overall week, the senior averaged 10.6 assists, 2.23 digs, 0.38 aces and 0.31 blocks per set.
  • Women's Volleyball Wins Hall Of Fame Classic

    The 2010 Volleyball Hall of Fame Women's Invitational concluded with Middlebury and Bridgewater State winning their respective brackets. A total of 16 teams participated in the 19th edition of the tournament, which was hosted by Smith College and Mount Holyoke College.

    Middlebury moved to 16-6 overall with a 3-1 (25-13, 24-26, 25-22, 25-19) win over Plymouth State in Pepin Gym. Megan Jarchow led the team with 15 kills, followed by Julia Gibbs with 14 and Jane Handel with 10.

    Middlebury took over sole possession of first place in the NESCAC with a 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22) victory over Tufts (14-5, 5-2) in Pepin Gym. The Panthers (13-3, 5-0) have now won six straight matches as they prepare to visit Skidmore on Tuesday.

    The Middlebury women's volleyball team moved to 3-0 in NESCAC play with a pair of wins in Maine. On Friday night, the Panthers earned a 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 25-12) win over Colby, before beating the host school of Bates on Saturday, 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-14).

    The Middlebury women's volleyball team earned a 3-1 (16-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-23) mid-week road win at Colby-Sawyer. The Panthers didn't hit well in the first set, but bounced back with three straight sets to pick up the win.

Sophomore Julia Gibbs (Houston, Texas) led the offensive attack with 14 kills, followed by first-year player Megan Jarchow (Cos Cob, Conn.) with a dozen.

    Middlebury won its fifth straight match, picking up a 3-0 (25-20, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20) win over St. Michael's in Pepin Gym on Saturday afternoon. Caitlin Barrett set a new school record with 48 digs in the match, breaking the old record of 44 held by Olivia Minkhorst in '06.

    The Panther women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-21) road victory at in-state rival Norwich on Wednesday night. Fourteen different players saw time on the court for the Panthers, as Sarah Studwell paced the offense with 11 kills on the night.
