The Middlebury women's volleyball team enjoyed a successful weekend at the Amherst Classic. The Panthers earned a 3-0 win over Westfield State to open the tourney, before topping the host school 3-1 in their first match on Saturday to extend their winning streak to seven matches. The weekend ended with a hard-fought 3-2 loss at the hands of Brandeis. A complete wrap-up will follow on Monday.
In the opener, Middlebury earned a 3-0 victory over Westfield State, using another balanced attack in the win. Whitney Bean earned eight kills in the match, Jane Handel had seven, while Elissa Goeke added six. Natalie DuPre came away with 13 digs, Handel had 10, while Cordle added seven.
Middlebury earned a tight 3-1 win over the host school in their first match on Saturday. Caroline Cordle and Handel each pounded out 18 kills apiece in the victory, while Handel came up with 24 digs. DuPre earned 21 digs, Cordle had 18, while Caitlin Barrett came away with 16. Bean earned four blocks in the win, while Lauren Barrett dished out 53 assists.
The Panthers dropped a five-set match in their final contest of the weekend, falling to Brandeis, 3-2. Handel (14), Cordle (13) and Julia Gibbs (13) led the team in kills, while L. Barrett had 45 assists. Cordle (23), Handel (15), Reisa Bloch (15) and L. Barrett (14) all contributed big numbers in digs, while Bean had 2.5 blocks.
