Middlebury College women's volleyball players Jane Handel (Evanston, Ill.) and Lauren Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) have been named to the All-NESCAC team, while first-year player Julia Gibbs (Houston, Texas) earned the conference's rookie of the year honors. The three helped lead the Panthers to an impressive 20-6 season, with their 16th straight trip to the NESCAC Tournament.
After earning a spot on the second-team a year ago, Handel earns first-team honors in '09. The sophomore led the team with 346 kills this season, third most in a single-season in school history. She ranked fifth in the NESCAC in kills with 3.6/game, which places her second on the school's all time kills/game list. The former NESCAC rookie of the year also averaged 2.98 digs/game this season, to go along with .45 service aces/game. Handel finished the year third on the team with 39 total blocks.
Barrett earns second-team honors as the team's setter. She ended the season with 956 assists to place her third among her NESCAC peers. Her 9.96 assists/game is second all-time on Middlebury's single-season list, while her 956 place her fourth. Barrett also earned .35 service aces, 2.01 digs and .27 blocks/game this season for the Panthers.
Gibbs had a big rookie season for Middlebury, ending the year third on the team with 189 kills. Her 2.33/game was second on the team, while she led the team and was second in the NESCAC with .67 service aces/game. Gibbs also added .36 blocks and .77 digs/game in '09.
