The Middlebury track and field teams opened up their spring seasons at the Ross & Sharon Irwin Meet. The Panther women racked up 217 points for the team title out of 11 squads competing, while the men scored 242.50 points to finish second behind Navy. The meet was hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University in California. The Panthers return to action next Saturday at the same school, competing in the PLNU Collegiate Invitational.
In women's action, the Panthers recorded a pair of individual event victories. Marykate Melanson cleared the bar in the high jump at 4'11" to tie for the win, while Katie Carlson crossed the finish line first in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:21.71. Alyssa Taylor finished as the runner-up in the distance event (18:39.28), while Katherine Merrick was fifth (19:35.95).
Other top-five performances were tallied by Erzie Nagy, who was second in the 1,500-meter run (4:34.32), Hannah Blackburn, who leapt to a third-place finish in the long jump (16'4.75") and tossed the weight a distance of 33'8", good for fifth place. Maddie Pronovost was right behind Blackburn in the long jump finishing fourth (16'3").
In her first collegiate action, Devon Player was third in the javelin toss (129'11.75"), just ahead of Carly Andersen's fourth-place throw of 123'9.5". Emma McGuirk finished third in the triple jump (33'10"), while the 4x400 meter relay team of Kate McCluskey, Jackie Kearney, Natalie Cheung and Lauren Henry stopped the clock in fourth (4:09.70).
During the men's competition, the Panthers posted numerous top-five efforts. Sam Klockenkemper finished third in the 1,500-meter run (3:54.69), just ahead of Sebastian Matt in fourth (3:55.79). Three Panthers finished together in the 5,000-meter run as Matthew Gillis was third (15:56.21), Kevin Wood came in fourth (15:56.53), while Brendan Wood finished fifth (15:58.86). Brandon Cushman ended up fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (57.26).
In relay events, the Panthers recorded a pair of runner-up finishes. The 4x100 team of Sam Rives, Jeremy Carter, Fritz Parker and Will Bain broke the tape in 43.21, while the 4x400 quartet of Parker, Jake Wood, Kevin Serrao and Lucas Carpinello crossed the line in 3:32.50.
Off the track, Taylor Shortsleeve tied for second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6'2.75". Alec Drobac leapt to a third-place showing in the long jump (20'2"), while Daniel Plunkett was fourth in the shot put (46'2.25").
