Track Teams Perform Well At N.E.'s

The Middlebury College track and field teams were both competing at the Division III New England's hosted by Springfield College over the weekend. The women's team placed seventh of 28 teams, while the men came in 11th in a field of 26.

Senior Kevin Bright (Sharon, Mass.) picked up another win in the 400 hurdles, finishing the race with a time of 53.00. Placing third in the 5,000 was sophomore Jimmy Butcher (Garden City, N.Y.) in 15:07.58, while sophomore Patrick Swan (Horseheads, N.Y.) turned in a fourth place finish in the 400. Sophomore Patrick Sedney (Underhill, Vt.) cleared 13'3" to finish fourth in the pole vault, while junior Bobby Marcoux (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) finished fifth with a toss of 148'7" in the discus.

First-year racer Jen Katz (Winchester, Mass.) earned New England Champion honors in the 200, finishing the race with a time of 26.31. Katz, along with classmates Emily Coles (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Jennifer Brenes (Lawrence, Mass.) and sophomore Lizz Huntley (Coralville, Iowa), broke their own school record by winning the 4x100 in 49.79.

Senior Whitney Creed (Farmington, Conn.) was Middlebury's other N.E. Champ, capturing the hammer with a 144'5" effort. Finishing second in the 100 hurdles was Brenes with a time of 15.21, while she broke her own school record in the long jump with a leap of 17'6", placing her fifth. Middlebury's other top five finisher was junior Beth Butler (Bronxville, N.Y.), who placed fourth in the 800 in 2:14.68.
