Indoor Track Has Success At St. Lawrence

1/22/05 - The Middlebury College indoor track teams both finished fourth at St. Lawrence over the weekend in competitive meet with several teams involved. A pair of school records were turned in on the men's side, as the Panthers turned in some solid performances over the weekend.

Senior Nick Digani (Northfield, Ill.) broke the school mark with a time of 4:04.84 en route to a win in the 1500 meters. The other school record was broken by the men's 4x400 relay team, who won the event with a time of 3:25.04. The team was comprised of Digani, juniors Kevin Bright (Sharon, Mass.) and Matthew Malek (Norridgewock, Maine) and first-year racer Patrick Swan (Horseheads, N.Y.).

Swan also turned in a solid time of 1:07.26 to finish third in the 500 meters, just behind Bright, who placed second in 1:07.16. Finishing third in the 55-meter hurdles was sophomore Alex Wellman (Charlotte, N.C.), with a time of 8.13 seconds.

The women sported five top five finishes on the day, led by first-year racers Lizz Huntley's (Coralville, Iowa) second place finish in the 55 meters (7.69) and third place finish in the 200 (27.86). Also placing second was the 4x200 relay team, who finished with a time of 1:520.03. Huntley, senior Sarah Berkowitz (Media, Pa.), sophomore Erin Oliver (Essex Junction, Vt.) and first-year racer Jessie Evangelista (Hughsonville, N.Y.) were members of the 4x200 team. Finishing third in the 500 was senior Allison Williams (Edina, Minn.) with a time of 1:22.17, while first-year athlete Heather Bessette (Malone, N.Y.) place fourth in the triple jump (32'11.75").
