Sixth-ranked Middlebury began its spring trip to California with a 5-2 victory over Division II Cal State LA on Sunday in Los Angeles. The Panthers improve to 3-0 with the win, while the Golden Eagles fall to 6-6. Middlebury returns to action on Monday with a 4:00 p.m. eastern match at Chapman.
Sunday's match was played under Division II rules where you must win two of the three flights in order to secure the doubles point. The third Panther tandem of Maddi Stow and Nora Dahl defeated Chelsey Ruiz and Mariko Sagara, 6-2. Middlebury clinched the point when the No. 1 team of Katherine Hughes and Skylar Schossberger bested Isabella Lopez and Amanda Schneider by an identical 6-2 score. The Panthers were victorious at the No. 2 spot when Heather Boehm and Ann Martin Skelly posted a 6-3 victory over Berta Acero Garcia and Luciana Di Laura.
During singles action, Christina Puccinelli gave the Panthers a 2-0 advantage with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lopez in the third spot. Hughes pushed the score to 3-0 via a 6-2, 7-5 triumph against Schneider in the top position, while Boehm clinched the match with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Di Laura at No. 2.
The Golden Eagles tallied their first point with a three-set victory in the fourth slot. Emily Bian fought back after dropping the opening set for a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-4 win against Sagara at No. 6. Cal State LA recorded the final point of the match with a tight three-set triumph in the fifth spot.
